As a homeowner, there are few things more unpleasant than walking into your house and being hit with the smell of sewage. While a sewer-like odor cause by a variety of issues, some of the reasons may surprise you. Here are five weird reasons your home might smell like a sewer.
1. Dry Traps
If you have a drain that is rarely used, such as a sink or shower in a guest bathroom, the trap underneath the drain may dry out over time. This can allow sewer gases to escape your home, resulting in a foul smell. To remedy this issue, simply run water down the drain to refill the trap and prevent odors from escaping.
2. Dirty Garbage Disposal
Your garbage disposal can be a breeding ground for bacteria, which can result in a sewer-like odor. To clean your garbage disposal, first, turn off the power to the unit. Then, use a scrub brush or toothbrush to clean the inside of the disposal, being sure to reach all of the nooks and crannies. You can also pour a mixture of baking soda and vinegar down the disposal to help eliminate odors.
3. Clogged Vent Pipes
Your home’s vent pipes is design to allow air to flow freely through your plumbing system. If one of these pipes becomes clogged, it can prevent air from escaping, which can result in a sewer smell. This can also be the case if you notice a sewer smell while doing laundry.
To fix this issue, you may need to have a plumber come and clear the clog.
4. Dead Animals
If you have a rodent or small animal that has died inside your home, it can cause a foul odor that smells like sewage. Check crawlspaces, attics, and other areas where animals may have gained access to your home. If you find a dead animal, use gloves and a mask to remove and dispose of it properly.
5. Gas Leaks
In rare cases, a sewer smell in your home may be the result of a gas leak. Natural gas has a distinct odor that is often described as smelling like rotten eggs or sulfur. If you suspect a gas leak, turn off all gas appliances, leave your home immediately, and call your gas company or emergency services.
While a sewer-like odor in your home can be unpleasant, it is usually not a serious issue. By identifying the cause of the smell and taking steps to remedy it, you can enjoy a fresh-smelling home again.
